Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway: 40 miles in '04

The Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway is off and running (or pedaling) to create a 116-mile trail along the Truckee River from its origin at Lake Tahoe to its terminus at Pyramid Lake. This is an entirely volunteer effort at present, with a nonprofit status under the Nevada Land Conservancy.

  • Janet Carson, Project Manager, reports the following current progress:
  • The Bikeway has a logo now and the website will be up soon: www.tpbikeway.org.
  • A professional brochure is in the works, suitable for fundraising and promotion.
  • Building an off-freeway link from Mogul to Verdi is in the design and permitting stage. We need political, financial and grading/paving help with this project.
  • Building a bike bridge near Lockwood is in the title research, predesign and permitting stage. - We need political and financial help with this project.
  • Legal research is underway to address a property owner concern about liability if the Bikeway crosses their land.
  • Discussions are underway as to who will own and maintain the Bikeway long-term.
  • Mapping and signage development is getting started.

What is the Project Status?

Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway Proposal
Anyone who wants to contribute money or professional services (not much manual labor at this time) may contact the project at janet@tpbikeway.org . The first year goal is 40 miles!

What is the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway?

A vision of following the Truckee River by foot or by bicycle from its source at forested Lake Tahoe to its desert terminus, Pyramid Lake.  The route will descend over 2000 feet in 116 miles, using a combination of existing dirt and paved roads, plus some sections of new trail and bridges.  Some sections will suit families out for an hour, others horseback riders, and the entire route will entice adventure cyclists traveling the distance.

Lands crossed include both public and private land in 2 states, 5 counties, 1 Indian reservation, and 3 federal agencies.

What is the Project Status?

A potential route has been mapped and inspected on the ground for physical feasibility.  Non-profit status under the auspices of the Nevada Land Conservancy is pending.  Discussions have been held with key utility and railroad interests, as well as a wide range of other entities.  First year plan for 2004 is underway.
